Prostate artery embolization

This procedure is now available in Durban and is a new treatment option for patients with BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) of the prostate.

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is indicated if there are persistent lower urinary tract symptoms despite medical treatment, reduced flow rates and if the prostate is enlarged (>40ml).

The procedure is performed as a day case, and is minimally invasive, whereby a thin catheter is used to access the small arteries supplying the prostate gland. Calibrated particles are injected into the prostate vasculature, resulting in shrinkage of the gland and improvement of symptoms.

PAE is best performed in conjunction with a Urologist, who will perform baseline investigations and assess the suitability of the procedure for each patient.
